Native American House Undergraduate Ambassadors, Will Bartee (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Major: Integrative Biology), Justin Bean (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Major: Mechanical Engineering), and Yanaba Schroeder (Navajo, Major: Human Development and Family Studies, Minor: American Indian Studies) have been awarded a Democracy is Indigenous grant, administered by the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) at the Aspen Institute. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), and at Illinois, we continue to work toward ending dating and domestic violence. Join the Women’s Resources Center (WRC) for events all month, stay informed about the Victims Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA), learn about reporting to UIPD and know about survivors' rights & options. The Office for Access & Equity (OAE) has resources available, and organizations can request an ICARE Sexual Assault Bystander Intervention Workshop led by WRC student facilitators. Together, we can play a role in creating healthier and safer communities.

It's October, which means, it’s time for the Democracy Summit. Systemic forces within public life have converged to stress the norms and values necessary for sustaining the institutions of democracy across the globe. Join the Office Civic Life in exploring the fundamental civic ideas that underline democratic societies.and the challenges to ensuring the stability of a multiracial democracy. The summit kicks-off with “An Evening with Jill Wine Banks" on October 21st, 6pm at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center Ballroom.  

Civic Life is hosting Elect Her for Civic Leadership. We encourage you to nominate and share with students this opportunity for young women to build a pathway to serving in their communities. Participants will, learn about the importance of women running for office; Develop and give an elevator speech about an issue they care about; Map out a network and start assembling a team to help them consider running for campus, local, state and national office; and meet elected leaders in our community. Participants will leave the training with a plan to run for office - now or in the future!

Hobson is the host, creator and executive producer of The Middle with Jeremy Hobson, a weekly radio show and podcast that airs on more than 400 public radio stations and is distributed by Illinois Public Media. Prior to this, he spent 10 years hosting numerous shows and special coverage on major news events, both domestically and overseas. He has interviewed presidential candidates, world leaders, business titans, artists, authors and journalists. He started in public radio at age 9, working on a show called Treehouse Radio in his hometown of Urbana.
