The Center for Global Studies invites submissions for its noontime series for the coming academic year (2026-27). Our talks fall into two categories: the first will focus of conflict and coercive uses of economic, diplomatic, and military power; the second invites U. of I. faculty and advanced graduate students to present works-in-progress that touch on any aspect of global studies. CGS would also be interested in research that explores the 10-year anniversary of the release of the Panama Papers. University of Illinois Extension has compiled a comprehensive, research-based resource to help Illinois residents understand the growing presence of ticks and how to protect themselves while enjoying the outdoors. Learn where ticks are commonly found, how to prevent bites, properly remove attached ticks, recognize signs of tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease and alpha-gal syndrome, and what to do if you find a tick. This self-guided training helps you recognize signs of mental distress, know what to say, and connect students or colleagues to the right support before things get worse. Our highlighted resource this month is The High Performance Computing in Biology group, the bioinformatics core for the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center, providing high-level technical expertise at the intersection of biological data analysis and high-performance computing. Our session host Chris Fields (HPCBio director) will explore how you might be able to use this resource in your research.

One critical component that makes research impactful is the effective presentation of data. In this workshop, you will learn some effective strategies for clear and effective data presentation in the context of journal articles, research posters and PowerPoint presentations. By the end of this workshop, you will learn conventions for writing with figures, methods for analyzing your figure and table design and how to apply these lessons to a variety of contexts. Women@NCSA invites you to join us Wednesday, July 15, via Zoom, for "Women’s Mental Health: A Global Perspective," featuring Flora Cohen, a professor in the U. of I. School of Social Work. Tracing the full arc of women's mental health and drawing from feminist frameworks and global data, Cohen's presentation makes the case that women's mental health is not a niche concern but a global human rights emergency that demands clinical, cultural, and systemic change.

The Language Acquisition Lab is currently seeking infants 14 to 20 months old for a word-learning study. Your child will first watch a short video at home the day before the visit. During the short visit to the lab, your child would sit on your lap and watch a video; we record where children look while listening to sentences. Participation involves attending three laboratory sessions, wearing at least two transdermal bracelets (on your non-dominant hand), and filling out surveys for two weeks. Up to $400 in compensation for participation.

The Nutrition and Exercise Performance Research Group is looking for participants to partake in a 2-day study to establish the utility of the indicator amino acid oxidation method in adults. Participation in this study involves 2-day habituation lead in with all meals provided, muscle biopsies, and blood, breath, and urine sampling during two all-day trials. Participation in this study involves collecting blood and muscle samples and completing resistance exercises during two all-day trials (14-16 hours per trial). The Alcohol Research Lab is looking for social drinkers to participate in a study that examines the effects of alcohol on brain activity as well as social and cognitive processes. Participation involves attending two 4-9 hour laboratory session and completing physiological and communicative tasks while EEG brain responses are recorded. A referral of at least one same-gender friend is required at the time of sign-up. Up to $250 in compensation.

Study on preschool child stress response interventions! The Family Resiliency Center is looking for 3–5-year-olds and a caregiver to attend one session and complete a follow up survey. We are studying the effects of nature and mindful movement on child stress response. $50 in compensation for completing all study components.

Healthy adults ages 18-40 with no hearing loss but significant difficulty hearing in noise are invited for a study on listening in noise. There is an online survey to determine eligibility followed by lab visits for those who qualify. Lab visits include hearing screening, listening to sounds, and measuring ear and brain activity. There is a maximum of three lab visits, each lasting 2-3 hours. Compensation for lab visits is paid in cash ($15 per hour). Parking is covered, and mileage is reimbursed ($0.655 per mile, up to a maximum of 37.5 miles per visit). To participate, complete our survey.

The Nutrition and Exercise Performance Research Group is recruiting recreationally active adults (19–40 years old) to participate in a 2-day study examining how food combinations affect muscle protein synthesis and whole-body protein utilization. Participation includes four free meals, resistance exercise, muscle biopsies, and blood, breath, and urine sampling across two lab visits.
