Ted's Café at the Beckman Institute will be closed Tuesday, June 30, for inventory. It will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 1. The café's summer hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and it serves breakfast, hot lunch, coffee, espresso, specialty drinks and a variety of baked goods. See the full menu online.

The Center for Writing Studies will be offering an online introductory Writing Across the Curriculum Seminar for TAs from 1-4pm, Aug. 19 and 20. TAs from all departments will learn more about teaching writing, responding to writing and using writing to support learning. Participants will receive a small stipend for attending. Space is limited. Faculty and staff can nominate TAs for the seminar using the nomination form on our event calendar through July 22.

Ramova Theatre and Japan House proudly present: Nick Offerman - An evening of humor and mirth with just a splash of comedy. Songs and slow talking that should, honestly, fix everything. There will be an opening act from Ho Etsu Taiko. This event is a collaboration between Ramova Theatre and Japan House. All proceeds go to support Japan House programming. Our writing group provides graduate students with dedicated time to make progress on writing in a supportive atmosphere. These groups are ideal for graduate students who are seeking to create or return to a writing routine, make progress and meet deadlines on long-term projects, or jump-start a new writing project. During this time, students will work on their own current writing projects and will not receive feedback. The Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience of Psychopathology (CANOPY) lab focuses on examining how activity and function of different brain regions influence cognitive, emotional, and social functioning and the implications for psychopathology, all through the use of a 7T MRI. Participation in this study involves an initial phone screening and three in-person sessions. Each in person session lasts 1-2 hours. Participants are paid for time completed at a rate of 20 USD per hour. If you are interested, please fill out our interest form.

I am recruiting LGBTQ+ couples for a study on how couples navigate family‑planning uncertainties in the current sociopolitical landscape. Eligible couples identify as an LGBTQ+ couple; are 18+; live in the U.S.; and are currently family planning OR have done so in the past 5 years. You do not need children to participate. The study includes one joint interview together and one individual interview per partner. Each partner will receive a $25 e-gift card for the joint and individual interviews ($50 total per person). Healthy adults ages 18-40 with no hearing loss but significant difficulty hearing in noise are invited for a study on listening in noise. There is an online survey to determine eligibility followed by lab visits for those who qualify. Lab visits include hearing screening, listening to sounds, and measuring ear and brain activity. There is a maximum of three lab visits, each lasting 2-3 hours. Compensation for lab visits is paid in cash ($15 per hour). Parking is covered, and mileage is reimbursed ($0.655 per mile, up to a maximum of 37.5 miles per visit). To participate, complete our survey.

The Learning and Language Lab is inviting teens ages 14-17 to participate in an online experiment investigating reading behavior. The experiment is about an hour long and involves reading sentences and responding to survey questions. The screening process includes a short survey followed by a brief video call if needed for verification. $15 in Amazon credit is offered as compensation. If your child would like to participate, you can access our screening survey and if they meet our eligibility criteria, we’ll reach out to you with more information.

The PLAY Lab is looking for children starting Kindergarten or first grade in the fall to participate in a year-long study. Participation involves attending five laboratory sessions over one year and completing some motor tasks and cognitive tasks some while various brain responses are recorded. Help us understand how language, nutrition and physical activity affect our memory! We are looking for Latino/Hispanic adults ages 50+ to participate in a one-time research appointment. Participation is free, and you'll receive $10! Please write your name, phone number and preferred time to talk in the linked interest form. The study includes: 1.) One phone call to screen for eligibility (5 minutes);  2.) One appointment (1.5 hours) where you will answer questions about your lifestyle and health; 3.) Wear an activity monitor for one week after the appointment. Conducted in Spanish or English.

Help make the Next Alcohol Fitbit! The Alcohol Research Lab is looking for participants for a validation study of transdermal biosensing bracelets, and we will be running sessions over the summer. Participation involves attending three laboratory sessions, wearing at least two transdermal bracelets (on your non-dominant hand), and filling out surveys for two weeks. Up to $400 in compensation for participation. 

Participation in this study involves collecting blood and muscle samples and completing resistance exercises during two all-day trials (14-16 hours per trial).
