During Advisory on Monday, Oct 27, we will be hosting our 2nd Quarter Assembly for all students/staff in Uni Gym.
The assembly will focus on honoring and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and Indigenous Peoples’ Heritage Month, as we are at the intersection between the two (Hispanic Heritage Month just having ended last week and Indigenous Peoples' Heritage Month just beginning in November). 
We hope that everyone will be inspired by the celebration!

Come to our volleyball event and become a better student for a better world.  Students For a Better World is hosting a Volleyball Tournament on Nov. 8, from 6-8 p.m, in Kenney Gym. Teams must have a minimum of 6 students in order to play. Admission is $5 per player. Group Leaders sign up and collect money to present at the event using the sign up link below. All proceeds will go to the charity of the winner's choosing! Along with the choice of donation, winners will receive baked goods. Hope to see you there!

Welcome all seniors to a brief workshop focused on exploring your identity in preparation for college applications and college life. Grow tools for self-awareness and sharing your self-knowledge in a college setting. We will be using creative materials in an interactive format. You can choose from three time options: Tuesday Uni Period (Oct. 21), Friday lunch (Oct. 24), or Monday Uni Period (Nov. 3). We will be meeting in the Wellness Room, 312. Uni High Statistics students will be hosting their annual Carnival in Uni Gym on Oct. 28 during lunch. This carnival is free to any Uni student. Come enjoy the unique games created by fellow Uni students and win some prizes! When you arrive be sure to grab some "Buhnerkempe Bucks" to use when playing the games. Any grade level welcome.

Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation contest with regional, state, & national levels of competition. Uni's annual Poetry Out Loud contest will be Thurs, Jan 15, 2026, during Uni Period. There will be informational meetings in Nov & Dec––keep your eye on UniWeek for details. If you know you’re interested in participating, you can sign up for Poetry Out Loud here. Choose a poem to recite from the extensive list at poetryoutloud.org, browsing by poet or by poem. (Note to previous contestants: the list, while still long, has changed a lot this year.) The sign up deadline is Thurs, Jan. 8 (but it’s best to start early preparing your recitation).

There's still time to submit a poster design for the Native American Heritage Month contest! Please see the submission form for contest guidelines. Submissions are due by the end of the day on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Three submissions will be selected to be printed and displayed in the school throughout November, and the selected artists will each receive $50. 

ExploraVision meeting during lunch on Wednesday Oct. 29 in room 301 (The biology lab next to the elevator).  Teams must be signed by the end of the meeting.  It may be relatively short and give you time to go elsewhere during lunch, but please come to the ExploraVision meeting first.  Know your group and topic and be committed to finishing the project even during busy times and through winter break.  Your group must have agreed on a topic even if the innovation has not been developed.  If you do not have a group, please attend the meeting to see if there are any groups that you can join.  I cannot find you a group. 

Submissions to Unique, Uni's literary and arts magazine, during the month of October will be considered for Unique's annual Halloween Contest! We have an opportunity to field a subbie scholastic bowl team.  Ms. K and Ms. Smyser need to know if there are enough interested students.  The season will begin after winter break, but interested team members should be attending practices now!  This initial season will include two tournaments, with the first one being on Jan.10 and attending regionals and sectionals (pending qualification).  If students fundraise enough, we will attend nationals!  The team requires a minimum of seven students willing to travel to tournaments.  Students must regularly attend practice and pay the activity fee in the main office.

A reminder to all members of the Class of 2026 that your senior items for the yearbook are due by 8 a.m. Nov. 5.  Due to new deadlines by our publisher, this will have to be a firm deadline this year.  You should have received a few emails on this including one from your yearbook staff contact with the form to be completed.  Also you can submit your photo and baby photo at any time via email.  If you have questions reach out to the staff.

Please join Uni MPAG for our October meeting on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. MPAG meetings are open to all Uni families, staff, and students, and new attendees are always welcome!
In our October meeting, we'll finalize plans for our upcoming multicultural game-playing event. Attendees are welcome to raise questions and topics for discussion and/or suggest event ideas. We'll meet on Zoom at go.illinois.edu/mpag (Meeting ID: 850 7082 8404, Password: unimpag).

SPIN features a Parkland resource fair where attendees can talk with many different Parkland departments and resources; a one-hour presentation including information on Admissions/Parkland Pathway, Financial Aid, and Career Services; and a student panel Q&A. They will also raffle off one $500 scholarship.

Guests can discover what Parkland has to offer through its academic programs, campus life, support services, and more from noon to 2 p.m. in the Student Union, Health Professions and Career and Technical Education facilities on the main campus, and Health Professions labs at the Parkland College on Mattis building.
There will be a shuttle service from the main campus to the other buildings. The event will also include an optional main campus walking tour with student ambassadors.
