Black History Month Ballroom Culture and Voguing Event
You may be familiar with Willie's dances during Uni events, but not too many know the history behind the dance style or even the name of the dance! This dance is called Voguing, and its origins come from the Ballroom community, a safe space for queer people of color since the 1860s in Harlem, predating the Harlem Renaissance by over half a century. Come to Uni Gym on Monday, Feb. 24 during lunch to watch Vogue performances and to learn more about: • The history of Ballroom • Different Ballroom categories • The creation of Vogue • Important figures in the Ballroom community Snacks will be provided!

Uni’s Asian American Association is collaborating with multiple language and cultural clubs to host a Multicultural Food Tasting Event for the Uni Community. This event will be Friday, Mar. 28 during Uni Period in Uni Gym. Individual students (not as members of a club) and parents are also welcome to participate by bringing a dish to share that represents your cultural background. Uni's Multicultural Parent Advisory Group recently hosted a two-part discussion of Heather McGhee's The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, and we wanted to make sure students also had the opportunity to engage in conversations related to McGhee's timely argument. We invite up to 25 students to attend a catered lunch on Thursday, Mar. 27 to discuss selections from The Sum of Us in small groups. We're asking participants to read two chapters of the book ahead of the lunch (PDFs linked on sign-up form). To participate, please sign up here by Friday, Mar. 14.

Congratulations to Boyou Huang for being the Countdown Round Champion of the MATHCOUNTS Champaign County Chapter! Special congratulations to our Subbie Math Team (Boyou Huang, Aiden Kim, Bryan Zhao, and Neil Roy Choudhury) for placing 1st in the MATHCOUNTS Chapter Round and advancing to State! Additionally, Joseph To and Alexander Caesar qualified for State with their individual scores. Congratulations also to Daniel Aviram for winning the Candy Counts competition! 4th Quarter Lunch Program Sign-Up
Uni’s Quarter 4 lunch program sign-up is now available. Menus for Spring 2025 are available here. If you’d like to participate in Uni’s Quarter 4 lunch program, please sign up by Friday, March 14. We are offering a 3-day plan (Mon/Wed/Fri, $162.80) plan or a 5-day plan (Mon – Fri, $281.20). Families who are eligible for full or partial fee waivers can participate in the lunch program at no cost. Checks for 4th Quarter lunches should be made out to "University of Illinois" and dropped off in Uni's main office by Monday, March 31, 2025. If you would like to pay by credit card, call 217-333-2870.

ISBE Spring Testing Dates
ISBE has changed its mandated spring tests for grades 9-11 from the PSAT/SAT to the PreACT/ACT. Subbies will take the IAR and ISA. Please note the following dates and information: Main testing day: March 31 at the Illini Union. • This will be INCLUDE Subbies, 9th/10th and 11th grade. • Seniors are scheduled for a volunteer day. • Accommodated testing times and locations will be emailed individually Subbie testing day #2: April 7 in Uni gym Make-up testing day: April 8 in Uni gym We will send out more detailed information including arrival times closer to the testing dates.

The University of Illinois Writing Project's pre-registration for its 2025 Young Writers Camps is open. Students may enroll for one or both weeks. Young writers experiment in a variety of writing styles and receive feedback from peers and teachers. Prof. Pete Shungu, who performed at Uni's Black History Month assembly, invites Uni students to sign up for this year's Illinois Hip Hop Camp, which will take place June 9-13, 2025. The camp is open to any students who have just finished 5th grade all the way through students who have just finished senior year of high school, so the entire Uni community would be eligible. The camp attracts students with all types of backgrounds, personalities and levels of prior experience. Registration will open soon. Spring Conference Meal for Teachers
